Gardening Prep: Avoiding Spring Strains
There’s something about the first warm days of spring that makes us want to get outside and start digging.
Garden beds get cleared.
Leaves get raked.
Soil gets turned.
And before we know it… we’re doing hours of work that our bodies haven’t done in months.
Every spring, I hear the same story:
“I felt fine while I was doing it… but the next morning, I could barely move.”
Sound familiar?
Gardening is wonderful for the body and the mind — but after a long winter, jumping in too quickly can strain muscles, joints, and especially the spine.
The good news?
A little preparation goes a long way.

Why Spring Gardening Causes So Many Strains
Over the winter months, many of us move less than we realize.
Muscles tighten.
Flexibility decreases.
Core strength weakens slightly.
Then spring arrives — and suddenly we’re bending, lifting, twisting, and kneeling for long periods of time.
That combination can lead to:
• Lower back strain
• Shoulder tension
• Neck stiffness
• Knee discomfort
• Lingering soreness that lasts for days
Gardening itself isn’t the problem.
Doing too much, too fast… is.

Think of gardening like exercise — warm up first.
• Start with 5–10 minutes of gentle stretching before heading outside.
• Break big projects into shorter sessions — 30–45 minutes at a time.
• Kneel on a pad or sit on a low stool instead of bending from the waist.
• Keep tools close to your body when lifting — avoid twisting while carrying.
• If soreness lasts more than 48 hours, your body is asking for attention.
Chiropractic adjustments prevent big setbacks.

A Thought Worth Remembering
Gardening is one of the most rewarding ways to care for your home and your health.
It connects us to the seasons.
To movement.
To fresh air and sunlight.
But just like tending a garden… our bodies need care and preparation too.
You wouldn’t plant seeds in frozen soil.
And your spine deserves the same thoughtful preparation.
Take your time.
Pace yourself.
And enjoy the process — not just the results.
🌱 Spring Reminder
If you’re planning yard work or gardening this season, it’s a great time to check in with your body before small aches become bigger problems.
Consistency now prevents setbacks later.
